چکیده

The use of hydraulic geometry and other geomorphic indices has been recommended for habitat restoration and creation of estuarine tidal channels. Although such an approach provides design guidance for tidal channel form, it does not provide guidance for the ecological consequences of channel form. This study investigates the potential linkage of the scaling of tidal channel form with ecological patterns and processes in estuarine tidal channels of the lower Chehalis River, Washington, U.S.A. Ebb tide surface velocity was related to channel size, as was exit time and export probability of tiny drogues, which mimic floating allochthonous detritus. Consequently, the amount of organic material in channel sediments scaled negatively with channel size as did the abundance of benthic surface deposit feeders. These observations suggest that the highest concentrations of fish feeding in estuarine tidal channels may be in smaller channels or in the smaller and more distal portions of large channels. Scaling of ecological patterns and processes with tidal channel size may be an example of a more general ecological scaling with landscape form, i.e., landscape

Spatial Drivers of Ecosystem Structure and Function in a Floodplain Riverscape: Springbrook Nutrient Dynamics

On riverine flood plains, reorganization by fluvial processes creates and maintains a mosaic of aquatic and riparian landscape elements across a biophysical gradient of disturbance and succession. Across flood plains of gravel-bottom rivers, spring brooks emerge from points of groundwater discharge that may occur in distinct landscape positions. We investigated how ecosystem processes in spring...

Across-channel distribution of the mean and tidal flows in the Khuran Channel, Persian Gulf, Iran

The Khuran Channel, Southern Iran (26°45’N), is a topographically complex channel which is open at both ends. Owning to its particular geometry, this narrow channel is subjected to strong tidal currents.Across-channel distribution of the mean and tidal flows were obtained over a semidiurnal tidal cycle in the Khuran Channel where the highest tidal velocity in the third day of the seco...

Transgression and Tidal Creek Development : The Role of Ecological Processes

Tidal channels are one of the most common and prominent geomorphic features on salt marshes. Because of their much smaller resistance to water flow compared with that of the densely vegetated marsh area, well developed tidal channels often function as arteries and carry significant amount of water as well as sediments during both the flood and ebb period of salt marshes hydraulic cycle. Therefo...

Association of the Flow Units with Facies Distribution, Depositional Sequences, and Diagenetic Features: Asmari Formation of the Cheshmeh-Khush Oil Field, SW Iran

The Oligo-miocene Asmari formation is one of the most important hydrocarbon reservoirs in the southwest of Iran. In order to evaluate reservoir quality and the factors controlling reservoir properties, detailed geological and petrophysical studies were carried out on 242 m of core samples from Asmari reservoir. This study is a part of a larger project that examines depositional history and rese...

طراحی کانالهای پایدار در بستر شنی

Over the past decades, numerous regime formulations, describing channel width, average flow depth and channel slope, have been proposed for gravel-bed rivers. Using the downstream hydraulic geometry measurements from 280 field channels, nine gravel-bed predictive formulations were compared. They are attributed to Bray, Chang, Hey and Thorne, Kellerhals, Neil, Parker and Simons, and Albertson. T...
